Bridge City Friends Meeting Calendar 17 January 2008, Thursday Reading Group at Davenports Time: 7:00pm Location: Dan, Lucy & Mark Davenport's [ map ] The focus of the reading group is nine of George Fox's sermons that were recorded by Friends over a 20 year period from 1671. These sermons were not generally accessible until 2001 when published with a useful amount of introductory material by the New Foundation Fellowship. That volume is called That Thy Candles May Always Be Burning: Nine Pastoral Sermons of George Fox and can be puchased online at http://www.nffellowship.org/books.html for $10. These sermons were chosen from a collection at Haverford College Library known as the Richardson manuscripts which includes extant notes on over 100 sermons given by George Fox and other Public Friends. These nine were chosen because of the quality of the recording (short hand usually, then written out) and because of the range of subjects they cover. For example, the theme of the second is the restoration of the equal standing of women in the Gospel. A part of the message of the first is an indictment of the assumption of white supremacy which acculturated Friends in the colonies had fallen into.
